What is the origin of trick-or-treating?

Answered By Hanson Landgren, Editor

It is a major tradition during Halloween. It is related to the "soul cake day" of Christian people with a belief that the treat pacifies mischievous spirit. Formerly, children who are conducting trick-or-treat vandalized houses that are not able to give treats. They roam around the houses and solicit candy or other kinds of treats. It became popular up to the 20th century. It was in the year 1970 when the tradition started to vanish because of several rumors that some households are giving poisonous treats to the children. Some of the parents are already accompanying their children while having trick-or-treating.
