Why do we carve pumpkins for Halloween?

Answered By Hanson Landgren, Editor

Carving of pumpkin was derived from the earliest Irish tradition. Prior to the use of the pumpkin, it was originally a turnip. According to some stories, ancestors are doing it to scare off evil spirits. It was when the Irish people came to America and realized that a pumpkin can be more realistic than a turnip.
